Leonardo Basso sprinted to ninth place on his Team Sky debut as the four-day Mallorca Challenge got under way.

The run from Campos to Ses Salines produced a bunch kick and Basso was straight into the mix, securing a top 10 after John Degenkolb (Trek-Segafredo) claimed victory in the European season opener.

Eight riders headed up the road but the day always looked like ending in the traditional bunch sprint. Phil Deignan, Kenny Elissonde, Michal Golas, Gianni Moscon, Ian Stannard and Dylan van Baarle all made their 2018 race debuts, and when the break were caught with 10km to go, helped move teammate Basso into great position ahead of the sprint.

The action continues on Friday with the Trofeo Serra de Tramuntana, which features a late climb over the Puig Major.
