Richard Carapaz continued his strong opening to the Vuelta a Espana with an attacking ride to fourth place on day two.

The Ecuadorian launched a move on the run-in to the final climb alongside teammate Andrey Amador and led the peloton over the top of the Alto de San Miguel.

That effort propelled him into the polka dot jersey, with fourth place at the finish in Lekunberri ensuring he remains firmly in the GC picture. Bonus seconds saw him drop one place to third overall, 11 seconds back on leader Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma).

Ivan Sosa was also present in a vastly reduced general classification group before losing contact towards the summit. On the final descent a well-timed move from Marc Soler (Movistar) saw the Spaniard go clear to pick up the solo victory.

A day of mixed emotions saw Brandon Rivera sadly forced to depart the race following knee pain during the 151.6km stage.
