Richard Carapaz put up a strong defence of his yellow jersey on a tough seventh stage time trial at the Tour de Suisse.

The Ecuadorian set the fourth fastest time on the 23.2-kilometre course, which featured an ascent and descent of the Oberalppass.

Despite taking time out of nearest rival Jakob Fuglsang, a strong stage win from Rigoberto Uran moved the Colombian to within 17 seconds of Carapaz’s race lead.

The final day sees the race head into more high mountain terrain, with a showdown expected on the Gotthardpass. The team will be up for the challenge in a bid to secure the victory for Carapaz.

Rohan Dennis was the next Grenadier home in 20th, with Eddie Dunbar finishing 26th on the stage.

Reaction

- Richard Carapaz

"I'm really happy to be able to keep the yellow jersey, we've put up a good defence, and the TT was pretty tough like we were expecting, but I'm really happy to continue wearing the yellow jersey, which is really important for the team.

"I think the lead to Rigo is still in my favour, we know it's going to be another hard day tomorrow, but we have a strong team to be able to defend our position. It's going to be a beautiful battle between us tomorrow, I'm sure, they'll play their game, we'll play ours, and that's what it'll all come down to. But I think we have a great team to defend."
