Richard Carapaz safely negotiated a tough 15th stage at the Vuelta a Espana and remains second overall

The Ecuadorian sits 39 seconds back on the red jersey with a pair of general classification tests remaining ahead of the final stage in Madrid.

Thursday's test was the longest of the race, taking place into a headwind, with wet conditions making life even more tricky in the final 30km of racing. As much as possible it was a day for trying to conserve energy ahead of more selective stages to come.

As a result of slick roads, the decision was taken to take the GC times with 3km to go, allowing Carapaz and his GC rivals to sit up and finish safely. Up ahead it was Jasper Philipsen (UAE-Team Emirates) who took the victory.

Friday's undulating test features a pair of categorised climbs before a flat finish, with Saturday's stage likely looking more selective - with a summit finish on the Alto de La Covatilla.
