Richard Carapaz battled it out with the lead contenders to place seventh on the tough Picon Blanco summit finish at Vuelta a Burgos.

The Ecuadorian found himself at the head of the race in the closing kilometres as the lead group exploded on the hors-categorie summit. He eventually crossed the line 52 seconds back on stage winner Remco Evenepoel (Deceuninck-Quick-Step).

Carapaz was joined by Eddie Dunbar and Ivan Sosa in the front group when the climb began, with both riders gradually slipping back towards the summit.

Earlier the team had been alert to place, at one point, five riders in the lead group as the race once again split apart in the crosswinds. The move was also bolstered by Bora-Hansgrohe riders but was eventually reeled in with 40km to go.

Christian Knees got through a lot of work on the front of the peloton early on. Filippo Ganna was instrumental in helping to split the race, while Carlos Rodriguez worked hard to bridge Sosa back to the action after he'd become distanced in the crosswinds.
