Richard Carapaz has explained his focus is now on recovery after fatigue forced the Ecuadorian to withdraw from the Vuelta a España.

After an exceptional season which included a Tour de France podium and an Olympic Gold medal in the road race, Carapaz has found himself struggling in the Spanish Grand Tour.

The Ecuadorian was unable to complete Saturday's 14th stage, and he will now focus on a period of recovery.

Carapaz said: "I wanted to support the team here at the Vuelta a España and have gone out there every day and given it my all, but unfortunately I’ve suffered with the heat and have ended totally empty. Now I’m going to recover and reset my goals.

"I am very proud of what I have achieved this season, and will work hard to build on this and keep moving forward, and will fight to achieve more success."
