Eddie Dunbar put in a superb ride to finish in second place on the opening day of La Route d’Occitanie.
The Irishman was active in the closing stages, launching an attack the final time up the Cote d’Aubignac. Reeled in by elite contenders Alejandro Valverde and Rigoberto Uran (EF Education First), the race came back together briefly ahead of the final kilometre.
With team-mate Ivan Sosa also present in the elite lead group, Dunbar was able to follow the acceleration of Uran, before eventually crossing the line on the wheel of world champion Valverde (Movistar).
Sosa crossed the line shortly after in sixth place, with Pavel Sivakov digging deep to limit his losses on the climb, coming home 10th.
Earlier on the penultimate climb Michal Golas launched a move, with a number of accelerations causing the peloton to blow apart.
