Vuelta a Espana – Stage 18: Comunidad de Madrid – Becerril de la Sierra, 177.5km

Tao Geoghegan Hart came home 14th after another impressive day out in the breakaway at the Vuelta a Espana.

The Brit was joined by Wout Poels in the day’s breakaway on a tough 177.5-kilometre stage featuring four first category climbs.

Poels had attacked early in a bid to go clear, with Tao bridging across in a move that had looked like it could make the finish.

However attacks on Puerto de la Morcuera broke apart the group, with the general classification contenders arriving to the fore on the penultimate climb.

Geoghegan Hart hung on for 14th at the finish, with Sergio Higuita (EF Education First) the only rider able to stay clear, winning the stage by 15 seconds over race leader Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma).

Team INEOS finished the stage with seven riders after Vasil Kiryienka was forced to abandon the race part-way through the stage.

- Tao Geoghegan Hart

"Yesterday took a lot out of me and everyone. If you look at the numbers it was the hardest day of the race. We had more of everything than the mountain days.

"Today it was just a case of listening for if something was going to happen. They said Astana were starting to ride and the group I was in wasn’t that committed. I did a few turns for Wout and then kind of sat up for the last two kilometres. I wasn’t feeling super. We came to the last climb all together, apart from Higuita up the road. And suddenly my legs were feeling better. So I thought why not? There was nothing really to lose."
