Filippo Ganna demonstrated some impressive power to sprint to second place on stage three at the Volta ao Algarve.

The Italian helped lead out Tom Pidcock at the stage's intermediate sprint with 25 kilometres to go, only for the pair to continue on as part of a six-man group.

The mini break saw their advantage pushed out to around 25 seconds, only to be reeled in in sight of the finish in Tavira.

That didn't stop stage winner Magnus Cort Nielsen (EF Education-Easypost) and Ganna, who powered on to hold off the chasing pack.

Pidcock picked up two seconds at the intermediate sprint and moved up to sixth place overall ahead of Saturday's queen stage. With bonus seconds at the line Ganna also moved up to seventh place on GC. The pair sit 26 and 27 seconds respectively back on leader Cort Nielsen. Dani Martinez finished with his teammates in the peloton and is just one second further back overall.

Friday also saw stage three at the Ruta del Sol and a day for the breakaway.

Salvatore Puccio and Connor Swift forced their way into a 20-man group which built up an unassailable advantage. Puccio worked hard with accelerations as well as covering moves on the run-in, leaving Swift sitting on ready for the finale.

With an amended finish due to high winds, the finale still provided a steep climbing challenge, with Swift coming home fourth. In the GC battle behind the team all finished in the peloton, ensuring Carlos Rodriguez (4th) and Tao Geoghegan Hart (6th). Pavel Sivakov also sits strongly in 12th.
