Filippo Ganna got the Deutschland Tour off to the perfect start with a strong victory in the opening prologue.

The world champion powered across the short 2.6-kilometre test to take victory by two seconds, an impressive margin across such a small stage.

That result elevated the Grenadier into the early lead of the five-day event, with two teammates joining him in the top-10.

Both Adam Yates and Kim Heiduk spent time on the hotseat on the way to seventh and 10th on the stage.

Reaction

- Filippo Ganna

"We are back after the Tour. We did a nice race today. Now we have four really intense days. It’s not completely flat and obviously there’s a climb. We have a really good young team and we hope to do really well and get a good result for the team.

"[The TT is] really short and I like my big engine just for the short races. We did a nice performance today. Without the TT bike it felt a little bit strange and it’s not normal. But we tried to do our best with the normal bike.

"For sue we have good climbers (in Adam and Egan). Ben Tulett is also really good in the climbs. We will see what happens in the next days but for sure we are here to give a good show."

Stage five of the Vuelta a Espana was a day for the breakaway with a group of 18 riders pushing up the road.

The Grenadiers rode well together as the early GC shifted slightly, with four escapees jumping to the top of the standings.

With Rudy Molard (Groupama-FDJ) taking the jersey, Pavel Sivakov and Tao Geoghegan Hart now sit seventh and eighth overall, 4:35 behind the new leader. Richard Carapaz and Carlos Rodriguez also sit close behind, 10th and 11th respectively.

The GC is set to shift again on Thursday with the race’s first proper summit finish.
