GC duo move up

Giro d'Italia stage eight: Terni > Fossombrone, 207km.

Geraint Thomas and Tao Geoghegan put in a late attack on a gruelling stage of the Giro d'Italia to move up to fifth and sixth overall.

The duo reacted to a move from GC contender Primoz Roglic on the final climb of the stage, cresting the summit ahead of their other rivals and finishing as a trio to gain at least 14 seconds on the next chase group.

The trio worked together in the final kilometres to add to their advantage ahead of Sunday's time trial, with Thomas now up to fifth (+52 seconds) and Geoghegan Hart sixth (+56 seconds).

After a hectic start to the stage which saw numerous breaks attempting to form, the definitive break of the day finally escaped after close to 90 minutes of attacks and counter-attacks,

This resulted in the pace in the peloton decreasing for a period, only to see it pick up again when the INEOS Grenadiers set a tough pace on the first ascent of the Cappuccini climb.

Pavel Sivakov set a tough pace, followed by Laurens de Plus which helped shred the bunch and led to other teams start to contribute to the pace-making.

Solo leader Ben Healy (EF Education-EasyPost) went clear to secure the stage win, but the race re-ignited behind when Roglic attacked the GC group on the second Cappuccini ascent, which led to the Grenadiers duo following to make overall gains with just one stage remaining until the first rest day.
