GC stalemate on Etna

Giro d'Italia stage four: Avola › Etna, 172km.

Richard Carapaz and Richie Porte finished stage four of the Giro d'Italia in a group of GC favourites as Lennard Kämna won atop Mount Etna.

The pair were part of a small group of favourites that crossed the line together after Kamna had won the stage from the break.

Carapaz finished seventh, with Porte behind after a good team display from the Grenadiers on the final climb significantly reduced the size of the peloton.

Following strong work from Salvatore Puccio and Ben Swift to keep the early break in check, Jhonatan Narvaez, Ben Tulett, Pavel Sivakov and then Porte combined to stretch the dwindling bunch.

Porte moves up to ninth overall (+2:04) with Carapaz just behind in 11th (+2:06) following the first mountain test of the race.
