Tao Geoghegan Hart rode to a valiant top 10 after an attacking ride on stage nine at the Vuelta a Espana.
And so it proved, with the race's main contenders overhauling Geoghegan Hart inside the final 7km, as rain poured down on the slopes up to Cortals d'Encamp. Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) took the stage, with Nairo Quintana (Movistar) coming home second to move into the race lead. Geoghegan Hart rallied to finish just over a minute back on Pogacar.
Wout Poels was also part of the day's break before slipping back on the final climb, while David de la Cruz, Sebastian Henao and Vasil Kiryienka had all done fine work in the opening half of the stage to support Poels and Geoghegan Hart.
Tao Geoghegan Hart: "I just tried to go my pace all day and take time when I could, especially on the peloton as I knew we would need some minutes to win. With it being at altitude you have to race a little differently to normal but I felt good and tried to go for the win all day.
"It didn’t come off but I enjoyed the stage and it was great to have four guys in the break, especially Kiry who did a massive turn to get us as much time as possible in the valley before La Gallina."
The riders will now enjoy a rest day in Pau, before Tuesday's individual time trial, starting in Jurancon.
