Gianni Moscon put in an impressive ride to claim fifth place at the Giro Dell’Emilia to cap a strong showing from Team Sky.

The team were active across a tough but picturesque 222-kilometre route, which culminated in four tough finishing laps featuring the San Luca climb.

Moscon benefitted from the hard pace-setting of Kenny Elissonde and Diego Rosa, who combined to significantly thin out the bunch as the laps clicked off in Italy.

With Giovanni Visconti (Bahrain Merida) up the road courtesy of a long-range attack with a lap to go, Moscon looked to enliven the final kilometres as he pushed out of the bunch on the wall-like final ascent.

Marked by Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain Merida), a group of four chasers eventually formed, with Moscon eventually crossing the line fifth in elite company.

Visconti stayed clear to take the race’s 100th edition by 11 seconds from team-mate Nibali, while Rigoberto Uran (Cannondale-Drapac) took the final place on the rostrum.

Sergio Henao was a constant presence in the lead group but was unable to follow the final moves, coming home just outside the top 10.
