Giro d'Italia - Stage 5 » Catania › Messina, 174km Tour of Hungary - Stage 1 » Csákvár › Székesfehérvár, 195km

The INEOS Grenadiers continued their smooth passage through the opening week of the Giro d'Italia with a measured performance on stage five.

On a day for the sprinters, the objective was again to remain safe and not lose time on the general classification. The stage allowed the team to conserve energy after Tuesday's climbing exploits on Etna, with both Richard Carapaz and Richie Porte holding station on the overall leaderboard.

Ben Swift played a team role on the day, using his sprinting legs to edge out GC rival Joao Almeida (UAE Team Emirates) at the day's intermediate sprint. The British champ took the maximum three seconds with a useful turn of speed.

Porte and Carapaz sit ninth and 11th respectively, with another sprint finish expected on Thursday as the race returns to the Italian mainland.

Wednesday also saw the Tour of Hungary get under way, with Elia Viviani coming within a whisker of taking stage victory.

The Italian was narrowly edged out by Olav Kooij (Jumbo-Visma) on the first day of action. Viviani and the team will have a chance to reverse that result on Thursday with another sprint finish expected.
