Bredene Koksijde Classic, 199.5km

Kristoffer Halvorsen produced a strong sprint from deep in the pack to claim second place at the Bredene Koksijde Classic.

The Norwegian was guided into the final kilometres by teammate Chris Lawless but was forced to fight back after losing the wheel ahead of the final kilometre.

After regrouping on the home straight, Lawless was squeezed into the barriers, opening a lane for Halvorsen to sprint into. The Team Sky rider was just unable to overcome the kick of Pascal Ackermann (Bora-Hansgrohe), with the German national champion claiming victory.

For Halvorsen the result represented his third podium finish in as many years at the event formerly known as the Handzame Classic.

After some early work from Christian Knees and Leonardo Basso it was Pavel Sivakov who brought the team to the front on the closing laps of the Koksijde circuit.

"The guys did a great job all day. On the Kemmelberg we saw a split and a group of 40 riders at the front, and we had all five of our guys in there which was really good. In the final they were in a good position riding together and everyone gave their best. It was really good to see.

"Kristoffer had to check up with 1.2km to go which cost him a little bit in terms of positioning and energy. So to be able to come back and do that sprint is impressive. He's happy with the result as Ackermann is a strong guy. All in all it was a really good race today.

"One of the reasons why we do these races is so that the young guys get opportunities to race and to get experience. It was a good performance from the team on Wednesday too but they were a bit unlucky. But by riding together you can see it's really important as they will also learn from the things that didn't go well at Nokere Koerse. Today things went a lot better and it's nice to be on the road with these young lads, and then having the experience of Christian on the bike. It's a nice group."
Final result:

1. Pascal Ackermann (Bora-Hansgrohe) 4:35:47
2. Kristoffer Halvorsen (Team Sky) s.t.
3. Alvaro Jose Hodeg (Deceuninck-Quick-Step)
4. Szymon Sajnok (CCC Team)
5. Timothy Dupont (Wanty-Group Goubert)
