Hayter looking to kick on after podium finish

Ethan Hayter secured an impressive first professional podium on the road on Sunday at Memorial Marco Pantani.

Second place in a reduced bunch sprint provided a very encouraging result for the young Brit in only his fourth race day of the season. The 21 year old began 2020 with his eyes firmly fixed on competing on the track at the now postponed Olympic Games.

Talking to INEOSGrenadiers.com after the race, Hayter explained: "I was pretty happy with the result, but obviously it's a bit frustrating to be so close to the win.

"The team were really good. We were originally working for Jhonatan (Narvaez), but his group got pulled back with 20km to go and he was really honest and said he would be too tired for the sprint after the attack. So on the final circuit he worked with Brandon Rivera to keep me out of trouble and ensured the bunch stayed together which was perfect."

After a stop-start year to date Hayter is now hoping to kick on, starting with Tuesday's Settimana Coppi e Bartali.

He added: “I've had a bit of a rough time in the last couple months with injuries and crashes and never really got to test myself in the races so far either, so it was really nice and I can take some confidence and hopefully build on this going forward.

“I'm excited for Coppi Bartali and hopefully building some good momentum and experience. I've not had the chance to learn much yet, but I did knock my Oakleys off my helmet with a musette today - so I will definitely be avoiding that move in the future!

“I'm not sure of my exact race programme with everything being so crazy at the moment, but I'm hoping to make the team and gain experience in the Classics.”
