Henao in the mix on German king stage

The race’s 196-kilometre ‘king’ stage saw a number of attacks, with Team Sky in the thick of the action. The team were positioned towards the front as the route criss-crossed the stunning vineyards of Mosel region.

 

With 38km to go following the day’s penultimate climb at Naurath Luke Rowe put in an acceleration, going clear off the front alongside fellow Welshman Scott Davies (Dimension Data).

 

Vasil Kiryienka was able to follow the counter attacks behind, and eventually joined his teammate as a strong group came together.

Eventually the move was hauled back, with Sebastian Henao moving to the fore after being full of riding during the day. Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas put in an acceleration on the final Petrisberg ramp to set up Henao, with the young Colombian eventually coming home 21st, 12 seconds back. Michal Golas was the next Team Sky rider home in a group 20 seconds further back.

 

At the finish in Trier Maximilian Schachmann (Quick-Step Floors) bested a four-up sprint finish to claim the win and also move into a four-second race lead.
