The brutal slopes of the Alto Mas de la Costa saw the GC contenders push on up the road, with Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) claiming the stage victory. Third place on the stage ensured Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana) regained the race lead for a third stint in the red jersey.

David de la Cruz was unable to keep contact with the leaders ahead of the final test, slipping from an overnight second place.

Wout Poels again attempted to make it into the breakaway following a fast start to the race, while Tao Geoghegan Hart tested the legs with an acceleration on the penultimate climb - Puerto del Salto del Caballo.
