Tour de France - Stage 16 » El Pas de la Casa › Saint-Gaudens, 169km

Richard Carapaz was alert to a late move on stage 16 at the Tour de France to retain his fourth place, on a day that saw Michal Kwiatkowski try to make the breakaway.

A surprise acceleration by Cofidis on the final rise of the Col d’Aspret-Sarrat caused a significant split in a peloton that had looked set to cruise to the finish. Carapaz quickly jumped into the select group that formed, crossing the line alongside the yellow jersey of Tadej Pogacar.

With the top contenders all covering the move the GC situation remains unchanged ahead of two key days of climbing in the high mountains of the Pyrenees.

Tuesday’s stage looked like one of the breakaway and so it proved. Kwiatkowski was part of a three-man group that opened up a gap heading on to the Col de Port, but eventually was reeled in by the peloton. A new larger move formed, with Patrick Konrad (Bora-Hansgrohe) taking a solo victory into Saint-Gaudens.

Earlier the downhill start to the stage was neutralised in the cold conditions, with the riders agreeing to stop to change clothing ahead of the stage proper.
