Moscon gallops to Guangxi win

Gianni Moscon surged into the overall lead at the Tour of Guangxi with a fine solo win on the queen stage.

Moscon hit out with a kilometre to go on the race’s only summit finish, distancing his closest rivals to take the fourth stage by five seconds and move into a nine-second lead.

Despite its short length - just 3.2km - the climb up to Nongla was always going to be decisive in shaping the battle for the title in China and the punchy ascent lived up to its reputation.

The win is Moscon's fourth in a little over a month, after successes at Coppa Agostini, Giro della Toscana and in the Italian national time trial title championships.

“We were all full gas and I saw the other riders were really tired and I thought ‘now is the moment’,” explained Moscon after stepping off the podium. “I didn’t think about it, it was just a feeling.

“I attacked and straight away had a small gap which I held to the end.”

Moscon will now hope to defend his race lead across the final two days in Guangxi, starting with the tough 212km stage five tomorrow.

“I think the most important thing was winning today, of course but tomorrow’s stage is long and pretty hard, with some long climbs.

“I expect a big battle tomorrow but I have a strong team with me.”
