Moscon wins in Alps as Pidcock seals sixth at Fleche

Tour of the Alps - Stage 3 » Imst › Naturns, 162km La Flèche Wallonne, 196.3km

Gianni Moscon continued his fantastic start to the Tour of the Alps with a second stage victory in three days.

The Italian infiltrated a breakaway group on another mountainous stage and was on the front foot as the 12 riders split on the final climb. Moscon combined well with his rivals as two groups went toe to toe on the run-in in a team pursuit style chase.

In the final metres Moscon proved strongest, seeing off Felix Grossschartner in the sprint, winning by almost a bike length.

It was an eventful day for the team, with Pavel Sivakov battling back from adversity after crashing on the descent off the Maso Albergad climb. Coming down on his right side, Sivakov lost some skin but was able to remount and finish in the peloton, retaining his second place overall. The Russian will be monitored this evening by the Grenadiers medical team but is expected to start the penultimate stage on Thursday.

With two stages to go he remains 45 seconds back on Simon Yates. Moscon elevated himself back into 15th, while Ivan Sosa and Daniel Martinez sit 13th and 17th respectively.

Over at Fleche Wallonne the team had good numbers at the head of the race in the final laps.

Tao Geoghegan Hart and Richard Carapaz helped follow moves, with Michal Kwiatkowski also patrolling the race, including into the final ascent of the Mur de Huy.

Tom Pidcock was caught up in a crash with 28km to go but was helped back to the front of the race. On the final ramp the young Brit looked to follow a powerful acceleration from Primoz Roglic, eventually finishing sixth. Roglic was overhauled by world champion Julian Alaphilippe in the final metres, with Carapaz also securing himself a top 10 in ninth.
