Jhonatan Narvaez sprinted to third place on a punchy uphill finish to stage two at the Vuelta a Burgos.

It was second time lucky for the Ecuadorian after a late crash derailed his challenge on the opening stage.

Narvaez was set up well by his teammates, with Ian Stannard and Vasil Kiryienka among those driving the pace into the gated town of Lerma.

At the finish it was Jon Aberasturi (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA) who claimed the victory over race leader Giacomo Nizzolo (Dimension Data) and Narvaez.

Defending champion Ivan Sosa and David de la Cruz finished safely in the bunch to remain in GC contention ahead of tougher stages to come.

Over at BinckBank Tour a last corner crash scuppered the chances of Kristoffer Halvorsen. The Norwegian had moved himself into a promising position in Aalter, only to see his path blocked as riders fell in front of him.

Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) emerged to take a third victory in a row, extending his race lead in the process.
