Pidcock battles to sixth in Algarve

Stage 2 » Lagoa › Alto da Fóia 171.9km

Tom Pidcock sprinted to sixth with Thymen Arensman in eighth atop a windswept Alto da Fóia.

After a slow start, an eight man move would gain north of five minutes over the peloton, ensuring they would have to up the pace in the finale in order to catch the escapees.

The acceleration came on the penultimate climb and quickly caught the remaining leaders. With the team well positioned just behind the head of the bunch, Tom, Thymen, and Magnus Sheffield would start the final climb in the lead group, as the pace ramped up another notch.

The last eight kilometres would prove to be a battle of attrition, with riders dropping off one by one. Magnus would slip back in the final couple of minutes, while Tom and Thymen battled hard in the brutal conditions to contest the sprint to the line.

Tom would put in a typically gutsy effort, finishing sixth, nine seconds back on winner Dani Martínez (Bora - Hansgrohe), with Thymen just behind, a further three seconds back, in eighth.

The result puts the Yorkshireman in seventh overall, with Arensman in eighth.
