Tom Pidcock put in a spectacular performance as he won gold for Great Britain in the European Championship Mountain Bike cross race.

Despite starting 38th on the grid, Pidcock powered through the field, taking a solo lead in the early stages which he gradually extended to become the  first British man to become mountain bike cross European Champion.

The victory comes the weekend before another of his key season goals, the mountain bike world championships, which the Yorkshire rider is happy with his preparations for.

He said: “It’s a good indication ahead of Worlds. I maybe went a little bit early, it’s tough at the front on your own.

"The idea was to kind of make it hard for myself as next week is the big goal, so a good day and it was super nice racing infront of this fantastic crowd."

This race was Pidcock's first off road since his Tour de France debut and he reflected on how he transitioned back to the mountain bike following the three week test.

"It wasn’t easy to switch back to the mountain bike after the Tour de France, I had a week downtime and then a couple weeks up at altitude. It's been weird, I had some sensations I never felt before, I was jaded and a bit mentally tried.

"But I got some training in and I came back from altitude feeling more myself. It’s going to be a long season, but I’m going to ready and hopefully be in my best shape next week."
