Volta ao Algarve stage five: Faro – Malhao, 173.5km

Wout Poels produced an impressive late charge on the Alto do Malhao to finish third on the queen stage, securing an overall podium in the process.
The Dutchman launched an acceleration heading into the final kilometre on a thrilling final day of racing. With general classification contenders strewn across the first-category climb Poels pushed clear with closest rival Enric Mas (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) on his wheel. After breaking clear of the Spaniard he was unable to claw back stage winner Zdenek Stybar (Deceuninck-Quick-Step), crossing the line nine seconds back. That was still enough to make sure of third overall, ensuring back to back overall podium finishes for the Team Sky rider.
Tadej Pogacar (UAE-Team Emirates) rode a measured race to make sure of overall victory, with Poels finishing just 21 seconds down overall. Second placed Soren Kragh Andersen (Team Sunweb) had made a late bid for victory but had to settle for second on both the stage and GC.
David de la Cruz put in a number of accelerations late on in a bid to make the race hard before slipping out of the top-10 overall. Tao Geoghegan Hart completed a strong week by helping keep things together for Poels in the final moments, before finishing ninth on the stage.

A consistent performance across the five-day race saw Team Sky come away with victory in the team classification.
