Tom Pidcock will return home to begin his recovery following a crash in the recon of the opening stage time trial at Itzulia Basque Country.

Following consultation between the INEOS Grenadiers team doctor and the race's medical team, the Brit was taken to hospital on Monday morning, and as a result did not start the event.

Initial scans revealed no fractures for Pidcock, who wished his team-mates well before departing the race. He will continue to be monitored by the INEOS Grenadiers medical team in the coming days.

The race kicked off with a technical time trial in Irun, with Ethan Hayter putting in an impressive ride to lead the team home in ninth place. The Brit was one of the latest starters and set a blistering early split, just one second back on stage victor Primoz Roglic (Bora-Hansgrohe). Unfortunately on the approach to the finish the weather turned, with a heavy downpour and hail creating difficult conditions in the final kilometres.

Despite that, Hayter was able to cross the line in the top 10, just 19 seconds back on Roglic. A further 10 seconds back was Michal Kwiatkowski in 20th, with Brandon Rivera and Carlos Rodriguez finishing 23rd and 28th respectively.
