Rohan Dennis put in a superb performance in the closing kilometres of stage two to ensure he retained the overall lead in Romandie.

After the Grenadiers had worked hard to control the 165.7km test, Dennis helped shut down some attacks on the final climb, before setting a powerful tempo all the way into the finish.

As a result the Aussie holds an eight-second lead, but the day saw the Grenadiers 1-2-3 lockout broken up after Patrick Bevin (Israel Start-Up Nation) picked up some bonus seconds at the line in the final sprint.

That moved him into second overall, just a second ahead of duo Geraint Thomas and Richie Porte, eight seconds back on Dennis. Sonny Colbrelli (Bahrain Victorious) won the reduced bunch sprint.

Andrey Amador and Owain Doull shouldered most of the workload during the race, riding well to keep tabs on a strong six-man breakaway.

- Rohan Dennis

"The team got no help from anybody else but we did a perfect job. There were a few people who wanted to have a bit of a crack on the final climb and we just controlled that. We put ourselves at the front to make nobody really want to do anything on the final descent to the finish.
"With three of us at the front they can tell I’m happy to sacrifice myself. On the slight downhill it’s quite fast and I don’t think anybody in their right mind would say they are going to go too far (off the front). So save their energy for another day. Tomorrow is another solid day and then Saturday is the queen stage and I’m sure there will be a lot of fireworks up there."
