Richard Carapaz remains second overall at the Giro d'Italia after a breakaway took the honours on stage 12.

The INEOS Grenadiers safely negotiated a hectic start to the stage which saw a hour-long battle to be part of the break.

With a hilly parcours that would suit a small group, competition was fierce to escape the peloton, with 25 riders going clear and quickly amassing a substantial lead.

With his close GC rivals not involved in this move, Carapaz and the Grenadiers remained well-positioned in the bunch and crossed the line with the maglia rosa as Stefano Oldani (Alpecin-Fenix) won the stage.
