Magnus Sheffield powered to second place in the fourth stage of Volta ao Algarve, with a fine display on his TT bike.

The 22 kilometre time trial was a technical affair, never truly flat and with twists and turns littering the course, both technique and power would be necessary to set a good time.

Filippo Ganna set some impressive early benchmarks on course, before just falling short of taking the provisional lead in Albufeira, concluding his run just as Sheffield began his. The young American powered round the course, setting the best time at both of the intermediate time checks, before crossing the line for first place. With only a handful of GC riders left to race, the time was sure to see Magnus place highly on the day.

Only one rider, World Champion Remco Evenepoel (Soudal - Quickstep), could usurp the Grenadier, meaning the 21 year-old would finish the day second, 17 seconds down.

The result also launched Magnus up the GC to eighth, and into the white jersey.

Filippo Ganna would end the day sixth on the stage, with Thymen Arensman just outside the top 10 in 12th.

The TT sees Thymen jump up two places on GC to seventh, with Tom Pidcock rounding out the top ten with one stage remaining - a summit finish up Alto do Malhāo.

Result:

1. Remco Evenepoel (SQS)

2. Magnus Sheffield +17"

3. Stefan Kung (FDJ) +29"
