Sixth for Bernal after Superga showdown

Milano-Torino: Magenta - Torino. 179km

Egan Bernal finished sixth in a thrilling centenary edition of Milano-Torino which culminated in a tense battle on the final ascent of the Superga which was won by Michael Woods (EF Education First).

Woods attacked with 300 metres remaining of the summit finish, leaving a high calibre group of riders in his wake following Bernal's stellar effort to close the gap to Woods and David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ) earlier on the climb.

That effort had brought Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) and Adam Yates (MItchelton-Scott) back into contention and with Tiesj Benoot (Lotto Soudal) attacking from behind, ensured a tense game of cat-and-mouse within the final kilometre, which saw Woods time his attack to perfection to edge out Valverde and Yates.

Earlier, fantastic work on the front of the peloton from Filippo Ganna on the flat, then Tao Geoghegan Hart on the first ascent of the Superga helped bring back the early break, with the final escapee Remi Cavagna (Deuceuninck Quick-Step) being reeled in after a solo effort just before the peloton crested the final climb for the first time.

Geoghegan Hart then neutralised a number of attacks over the top of the Superga and on the technical descent, setting a pace that both thinned out the peloton and kept Bernal out of danger.

Once the attacks reigned in on the final climb into Torino, Bernal was able to react to the first and second wave of accelerations, but was unable to stop Woods in the finale.
