Geraint Thomas was pleased with his performance on stage two of the Tour de Suisse as he moved into the top 10 overall, 18 seconds behind new leader Kasper Asgreen (Deuceuninck - Quick-Step).

Thomas finished safely in the bunch after Luis Leon Sanchez (Astana) won from a late breakaway, with Ben Swift was Team INEOS' top finisher in 10th.

The stage was a tricky circuit of Langnau im Emmental which featured six category two climbs, which saw the peloton split an re-form on numerous occasions throughout the day and after revealing he felt a little tired on Saturday's opening TT, Thomas was happy with the testing parcours.

He told TeamINEOS.com: "I felt a lot better today - and felt a lot better as the race went on really. It was a steep climb with 20km or so to go but I felt fine. The legs felt good.

"After yesterday, this was just what I needed - a long, attritional stage. We’ve got three days before we hit the mountains, which will be the GC days, so hopefully we’ll be all good for that.

"It’s nice to be riding with Egan again. It’s good to get that bond and that understanding again, the main goal is the Tour and there’s probably half the team here.

"But we also want to get a good result here - whenever you’ve got a number on your back, you want to be winning races. It’s not the be all and end all though, as the main goal in the Tour in a few weeks time.”
