The INEOS Grenadiers worked hard to emerge through a wet and cold 10th stage at the Giro d’Italia with Geraint Thomas’ race lead intact.

The team monitored moves where necessary and set the tempo at key points across a gruelling 196 kilometres of racing.

Thomas and Tao Geoghegan Hart finished in the main bunch to retain first and third places overall, with Thomas holding a slender two-second lead over Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma). Geoghegan Hart sits a further three seconds back, as the GC was reshuffled due to the abandonment of leader Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick-Step) due to COVID-19.

Geoghegan Hart and Pavel Sivakov monitored moves at different points during the day, with the bunch negotiating the ascent and freezing cold, wet descent of the Passo delle Radici.

Sivakov moved up to eighth overall on the day (+2:15), with Aleksandr Vlasov (Bora-Hansgrohe) another high-profile abandon during the stage.

Thymen Arensman and Laurens De Plus also finished inside the lead group and now sit 10th and 11th on the GC.

- Geraint Thomas

“[Being in the jersey] was nice. It was obviously not ideal conditions to be wearing the jersey for the first time. It was a solid day, attacking at the start for the breakaway, then pretty cold over the top. A bit of a crazy descent and then guys trying to bring back the break for the final. A lot going on and a solid day, but happy to get through.

“I’m not taking anything for granted in this race, anything can happen, especially with the weather and stuff. We’ll see and just take it day by day. Every day I’m in [the jersey] will be very nice.”
