Van Baarle and Filippo Ganna had managed to make the break after a high octane start to the stage, which saw numerous attacks reeled back in as every team attempted to escape the peloton.

The Dutch rider was part of an initial four rider move that managed to gain a small advantage, with their numbers swelled by Ganna and another group to form the decisive 25-man move.

The duo worked well together to ensure the group stayed together, with Ganna supporting Van Baarle up util the final climb, when the Paris-Roubaix winner of lone attacker Alberto Bettiol (EF Education Easypost).

Once Bettiol was caught, several cat-and-mouse moves ensued, leading to a split. Van Baarle was able to bridge from the second to the first group, before attacking the leaders in the final kilometre.

Unfortunately, he was caught before an uphill sprint ensued behind, with Cort winning a photo finish and Van Baarle coming in fifth.

Geraint Thomas, Adam Yates and Tom Pidcock rolled in as part of a reduced peloton behind and retain their GC positions.

Geraint Thomas

"It was ok, I felt alright at the start, considering I'm not a fan of the day after rest days, it can be hard to get going, but it was all good. We got the two guys in the break that we wanted and the rest was pretty straightforward.

"Two big days coming up now. I think everyone is mindful of the Col de Granon, especially with the Telegraphe and the Galibier before - it's going to be a solid day. Then the next day, back over the Galibier, Col de Feur and Alpe d'Huez."
