Dylan van Baarle claimed fourth place from the breakaway on stage 14 as Richard Carapaz retained second overall at La Vuelta a Espana.

Van Baarle forced his way into a strong seven-man move that stayed clear of the peloton into the finish in Ourense. Despite a late split in the group, the escapees came back together 1.2 kilometres from the finish, with the Grenadiers rider taking fourth on the uphill drag. Tim Wellens (Lotto Soudal) edged out Michael Woods (EF Pro Cycling) at the line.

With no major climbs on the day, the general classification battle went unchanged, with Carapaz staying locked to the wheel of chief rival Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) on the run up the line. The pair finished 16th and 10th respectively, with a gap of 39 seconds still separating the two with four stages remaining.

The stage was clipped off at a rapid tempo, with Van Baarle making the break at the second attempt. Andrey Amador was also present in the early moves, before he and the team rallied around Carapaz for the remainder of the test.
