Dylan van Baarle has revealed his disappointment after suffering a hand injury at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad.

Van Baarle suffered the injury in a collision with a small group of riders with around 50 kilometres remaining, but still managed a top 20 finish in the first cobbled classic of the season.

And after a bright start to 2019, the 26 year old will now miss some of the spring classics and explained to TeamSky.com what happened.

He said: "It was a really small crash around the 144km mark, with maybe five or six guys involved.

"We just got around the corner, started to pick up speed and then we crashed, I hit some bikes - I actually didn't hit the deck at all.

"Then I saw that my finger was not in the right position. I pulled it back into place and kept on riding.

"I don’t know what it was, but I heard a pop and I kept on riding, but I now know I have injured the my hand as well as my finger, the fifth metacarpal.”

“I will fly to Manchester on Monday to see a specialist and probably have an operation."

Van Baarle is disappointed with the disruption to his season, having started 2019 with victory at the Herald Sun Tour and being a key rider at Tour of Algarve.

"I felt pretty good in the final today, I finished in the second group even though I couldn't pull on my handle bars and I couldn’t sprint.

"So I’m really disappointed that this Opening Weekend is over but there is also a question over the rest of the spring season as you don't know how [your body] will react."
