Close second for Welsford as Sheffield seals top 10

Sam Welsford came within centimetres of victory on the final stage at Tirreno-Adriatico, while Magnus Sheffield secured ninth place overall.

The week-long stage race came down to a traditional sprint finish in San Benedetto del Tronto, but the day played out at a much tougher pace.

The INEOS Grenadiers were able to help bring the race back together after the bunch was split by Alpecin-PremierTech on the day's second major climb.

Welsford enjoyed strong support on the run-in, before a huge final turn from Filippo Ganna. Boxed in slightly, the Australian had to delay the start to his sprint and was narrowly edged out by Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek).

A bunch sprint ensured Magnus Sheffield was able to wrap up ninth place overall, 2:02 back on race winner Issac Del Toro (UAE Emirates - XRG). Thymen Arensman was also present in the front split during the stage and came home 15th overall.
