Stage 1 » Neumarkt/Egna › Kurtinig/Cortina 133.3km

Tobias Foss sprinted to his first victory for the Grenadiers in emphatic style on stage one of Tour of the Alps. The win sees the Norwegian move into the race lead at the start of the five-day event.

The Grenadiers set the pace for the majority of the day, ensuring a six man move never gained more than four minutes of an advantage on the relatively short run to Cortina. On the final climb, with roughly 20 kilometres to go, the pace was high, with the peloton rapidly shrinking.

Over the top, and the team had Foss and Geraint Thomas in a select lead group, with Filippo Ganna working hard to chase back on behind.

A myriad of attacks came and went in the run-in, with both G and Tobias getting stuck in, before a four man move including Foss went clear with under two kilometres to go.

The move rapidly established a gap, as Geraint worked to slow down the chase. Into the sprint and Foss launched from afar, driving into the slight incline all the way to the line, to claim his maiden victory with the Grenadiers.

Geraint Thomas, after some great teamwork, came home sixth, with Filippo Ganna leading the chasing back in twelfth.
