Narvaez fourth as Thomas rebounds from late crash

Jhonatan Narvaez finished fourth from the stage 19 breakaway to continue his superb Giro d'Italia.

The Ecuadorian powered his way into the day's escape and was able to follow the accelerations as the group became more select over a pair of categorised climbs.

Andrea Vendrame (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) was able to ghost clear on the descent off the Sella Valcalda, opening out a gap to the chasers which could not be closed.

At the line Narvaez came home fourth, in what is his fourth top-five finish of the race.

Behind, the GC group would cross the line almost 16 minutes back. There was late drama as Geraint Thomas crashed following a touch of wheels on the final ascent. A quick bike change saw the Welshman back under way, where he was able to rejoin a select GC group which had sportingly knocked off the pace.

The GC went unchanged as the group crossed the line together, with one big mountain showdown remaining on Saturday. Thomas remains third, 22 seconds back on Daniel Martinez (Bora-Hansgrohe). Thymen Arensman was also present and retains sixth overall.
