Sam Watson sprinted to sixth place in Southwold at the Tour of Britain got under way on the south-east coast.
The INEOS Grenadiers came to the fore late on to help set up a sprint, with big turns from AJ August, Lucas Hamilton and Ben Swift on the run-in.
Watson battled for position through the final corners on route to sixth, with Matthew Brennan (Visma | Lease a Bike) claiming victory and the early race lead.
Geraint Thomas finished safely in the bunch alongside Thymen Arensman despite suffering a front puncture whilst on the front with 11km to go.

In Spain the Vuelta a Espana resumed following the opening rest day, with Egan Bernal limiting his losses well on stage 10.
A rapid stage concluded with a climb of the first-category El Ferial climb. As the GC attacks fired in the final kilometres, Bernal settled into his own rhythm. Michal Kwiatkowski had forged his way up the road as part of the day’s large breakaway, and would play a key role for his teammate after dropping back.
Bernal retains 11th place overall and now sits 2:55 back on new leader Jonas Vingegaard (Visma | Lease a Bike).
Reaction
- Egan Bernal
“It hasn’t been my best day. The stage has been super fast, as it took nearly two hours and a half for the breakaway to go, and that took its toll. On the final climb, I just tried to set my own pace and manage my effort.
“Many times in life, one just isn’t in his best shape. On those occasions, you just need to make the best out of your body, your mind and your team - and just achieving that is very rewarding indeed.”
