Filippo Ganna got the team’s Tirreno Adriatico week off to a perfect start with victory in the opening time trial.

The world champ clocked a time of 15 minutes and 17 seconds across the pan-flat 13.9-kilometre course, with a winning margin of 11 seconds.

The Grenadier had held a slender advantage through the opening split, but powered home his winning margin with a tailwind finish, taking the blue leader’s jersey in the process.

There were a host of strong rides from Ganna’s fellow Grenadiers. Tao Geoghegan Hart clocked the 14th fastest time, with Richie’s Carapaz and Porte 20th and 25th respectively.

Remco Evenepoel (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) proved to be Ganna’s closest challenger, with Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) in third, 18 seconds back.

- Filippo Ganna

"Today we did a perfect race. I pushed a lot ahead of coming here, as I love this race and today I showed how much I want to win. This is an important result for me and the team and now we look to tomorrow – we have a sprint and we will see if we can conserve the jersey.

"When we started there was a lot of headwind and thought ‘today is hard’. Then we turned and the speed improved. It’s a special race and a special result.

"I will support my teammates and we will see if my legs are ready to arrive at the end of stages. For sure we need to save a little bit of energy because in less than two weeks we have a special race in Italy (Milan-San Remo) and I want to arrive with good legs."

Monday also saw stage two of Paris-Nice, with crosswinds ripping into the peloton on flat, exposed roads.

The Grenadiers were alert to the threat and placed Adam Yates, Dani Martinez and Luke Rowe in the lead group. That positioning proved key as the group largely stayed away to the finish. Our GC duo sit 39 seconds behind overall leader Christophe Laporte (Jumbo-Visma).
