Our hopes were high for the Hammer Series but nobody could have predicted just how thrilling the inaugural edition's finale would be. Caught by Team Sunweb with 3km to go in the final Hammer Chase, it looked like our chances of winning the title were slipping away. Step forward Tao. After the team had edged back ahead through the final corner, the 22 year old, who had excelled in the Hammer Climb on day one, produced a gutsy sprint to just hold off three of Sunweb’s team and seal the win. That wasn’t the end of Tao’s strong month either - he produced another encouraging climbing performance at the Tour de Suisse, finishing 14th overall, before claiming fourth in the British national time trial championship.
There’s not many better places to claim your first win of the season than atop Alpe d’Huez. That’s exactly what Pete did at the Criterium du Dauphine, climbing to a famous win on stage seven. The Manxman got in the day’s break and, when it became apparent that it would stay away, he hit the gas. Only former teammate Ben Swift (UAE Team Emirates) was able to stick with him until the foot of the final climb, when Kennaugh shook him off and forged on for a brilliant win.
