At the Tour of Britain, Omar Fraile and Tom Pidcock remain in contention overall following a sodden test from Durham to Sunderland.
The Grenadiers led the chase of a stage-long break away which escaped earlier in the day, only to see the escapees narrowly stay away despite the peloton fighting to close them down all the way to the line.
The result means Fraile is fifth on GC, eight seconds behind leader Corbin Strong (Israel Premier Tech) with Pidcock 14 seconds off the lead in eighth.
