A gritty climbing display from Egan Bernal saw him finish third on stage five of Tour de Suisse to move up to third overall.

Bernal was able to dig in on the final climb after the decisive attack from race leader Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) saw him win the stage solo, with the Colombian fighting to finish third and take bonus seconds on the line.

The result moves Bernal third overall, +1:11 on Yates, with Tom Pidcock now eighth overall after he finished seventh on the stage.

Earlier the Grenadiers had made the stage difficult for their rivals, setting a tough pace on the second of three categorised climbs.

The team combined well to maintain a high pace then came to the fore again on the final climb to use a numerical advantage to reduce the peloton.

This saw the lead group dwindle down to just six riders, with Joao Almeida (UAE Team Emirates) then taking up pace-setting duties to launch Yates.

Bernal was initially dropped by the attack, but then was able to ride at his tempo to limit losses, but still gain places overall - moving third on GC with three stages remaining.
